Frequently Asked Questions
Applications
How long does the full application process take?
From submission of a complete application, plan on approximately 16–20 weeks before the examination date. Character and fitness review typically takes 10–14 weeks; supplemental investigations may extend this timeline.
Can I save a draft and return later?
Yes. The portal preserves your progress automatically every 30 seconds, and on demand via the Save & continue button. Drafts are retained for 18 months.
What happens if my references don't respond?
Each reference receives an initial invitation plus two automatic reminders. After the third request, you will be notified and asked to submit an alternate reference. Nonresponse does not reflect poorly on an applicant.
Do I have to submit everything at once?
No. The core application can be filed while supporting documents (transcripts, Form 3 references, fingerprint results) arrive separately. All items must be received before the filing deadline for the application to be considered complete.
How do I request a fee waiver?
Fee waivers are available for applicants demonstrating financial hardship under Rule 702(h). Submit Form 8 with supporting financial documentation at least 60 days before the filing deadline.
What if I withdraw after filing?
Withdrawals submitted at least 45 days before the exam receive a 50% refund of filing fees. No refund is issued thereafter; prior fees do not apply to future administrations.
Bar Examination
When are exam results released?
July administration results are typically released in late September. February results are released in mid-April. Exact release dates are announced four weeks in advance through the applicant portal.
Is remote testing available?
No. All components of the UBE are administered in person at approved testing centers. Remote proctoring may be authorized as an ADA accommodation for qualifying applicants.
How do I request testing accommodations?
Submit Form 7 and supporting documentation at least 90 days before the examination. Decisions are communicated within 30 days of a complete submission.
Can I transfer a UBE score from another state?
Yes, within the five-year portability window. The transferred score must meet the minimum passing score in this jurisdiction (266). Submit the transfer application and official score report from NCBE.
What laptop software is approved?
ExamSoft's Examplify is the only approved platform. Applicants must download and complete a mock exam at least two weeks before the administration date.
Character & Fitness
What gets reviewed in the C&F process?
Employment history (ten years), academic and professional discipline, litigation history, financial responsibility, and any criminal matters. Disclosure is required regardless of disposition.
Will a prior arrest disqualify me?
Rarely. The Board evaluates conduct holistically, focusing on recency, candor, and rehabilitation. Full disclosure of all incidents — including sealed or expunged records — is required and is evaluated far more favorably than omissions later discovered.
Do mental-health disclosures affect admission?
The Board follows NCBE guidance on mental-health disclosures: questions focus strictly on current conduct-impairing conditions, not diagnosis or treatment history. Seeking care is never a disqualifying factor.
How long does C&F review take?
Typically 10–14 weeks from the date of a complete filing. Supplemental investigations may extend this timeline by 4–8 weeks.
After admission
When do I take the oath of admission?
Swearing-in ceremonies are held quarterly at the State Supreme Court. New attorneys are notified of their session within two weeks of final Board approval.
What are the first-year CLE requirements?
New admittees must complete a 6-hour New Lawyer Training module within 12 months of admission, in addition to the standard 30-hour annual CLE requirement after the first year.
How do I obtain a certificate of good standing?
Submit the Certificate Request form through the attorney portal. Standard processing is 5 business days; expedited processing is available for an additional fee.
Can I practice while results are pending?
No. Practice of law before formal admission — including drafting legal documents for a fee, appearing in court, or providing legal advice — constitutes unauthorized practice. Supervised intern work under Rule 711 is the only exception.
What if my contact information changes?
Update your address, email, and phone through the attorney portal within 30 days of any change. Failure to maintain current contact information can affect disciplinary and CLE compliance status.
